Questions
How do I type the § symbol?
On Windows hold Alt and type 0167 on the number pad (or Alt+21). On macOS press Option+6. On Linux use your compose key, or copy it from this page. In most plugin configs you can simply write & instead.
Why do color codes not work in my server.properties MOTD?
server.properties needs the section sign written as a Unicode escape, \u00A7, because the file is read as Latin-1 by many server versions. The MOTD Editor exports it in that form automatically.
Can I use color codes in signs, books and item names?
In vanilla survival you cannot type § in signs or anvils. Use commands with text components (/give with a custom_name component, /tellraw), or a plugin that translates & codes.
What does &k (obfuscated) do?
It replaces every character with a random character of the same width many times per second, producing the “magic” scrambling effect. It is often used around titles like &k!!&r Text &k!!.
Why are &m and &n colors on Bedrock?
Bedrock Edition reused the m and n codes for its material colors (redstone and copper), so strikethrough and underline are not available there. On Java they remain strikethrough and underline.
